What is Meta tags?

Most of the webmaster uses meta tags in their websites. If you are visiting the website then right click and view page source you will see some meta tags with corresponding attributes. Newbies maybe don’t know about this. Hence I have specially written this post to aware webmaster about meta tags.

Meta tags provides information and metadata about webpage and supports HTML and XHTML language. They are written in <head> section. Like other html tags Meta tags also contents attributes and each attributes have different characteristics.

The main thing that all webmasters should know is, Search Engines uses meta tag to put relevant result. Hence, Meta tags are considered as one of the SEO factor.

Although Search Engine not only depend on Meta tags. But It is recommended to have a meta tag to webpage.

List of Meta tags with attributes and their uses:

Basic Meta tags:

Meta name description:

Everybody knows that Search Engine snippet is so small than your actual content on webpage. Description Meta tags enables webmaster to put brief summary about content of webpage and that will be appear on the Search Engine snippet. Search Engine uses these information to serve result for relevant keyword. You can put 150 words as description. Since it is very important meta tag, use optimized keywords of your content.

Syntax : <meta name=”descriptioncontent=” write description here”>

Meta name Keyword:

Now Google does not consider a meta keyword tag in web ranking. But other Search engines do. Hence, Keyword meta tags are also recommended to use. Keyword meta tags includes individual keywords separated by comma. Don’t use lots of keywords to your content that may lead to keyword stuffing. Also don’t use keyword which are unrelated to your content. Don’t do anything which put negative impact. Be in your limit.

Syntax: <meta name=”keywords” content=” Keyword 1, keyword 2…..”>

Meta name Robots:

This feature enables or disables the crawler to visit and crawl webpage. Use this feature wisely otherwise your search engine ranking may affected.

Syntax:

<meta name=”robots” content=”index, follow”>
<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex, nofollow”>
<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex, follow”>
<meta name=”robots” content=”index, nofollow”>

Meta name author:

The author meta tag includes information about the web page’s creator, or webmaster, as well as contact information, an e-mail, and the company name. i.e. metadata about author. Although it is not an important SEO element but they do make your webpage professional.

syntax:

<meta name=”author” content=”author info”>

Meta name copyright:

The Copyright meta tag defines website copyrights and ownership. It may contain company name, owner name etc.

Syntax: <meta name=”copyright” content=”owner or company info”>

Meta name revisit after:

The revisit after meta tag tells crawler to revisit the webpage after specified time. You may set value as per your posting frequency. If you create new post daily then set value 1 day. If you are posting weekly then set the value as 7 days.
This feature is used for unnecessary crawling. Also every visit crawler will see updated content.

Syntax: <meta name=”revisit-after” content=”period”>

Example: <meta name=”revisit-after” content=”1 day”>

Meta name expires:

The Expires meta tag tells search Engine algorithm to remove the page from Search Engine after specified time.
This feature is mostly useful for sports website. If football tournament will end on 31st December 2014 then meta tag will be <meta name=”expires” content=”tue, 31 dec 2015″>

syntax: <meta name=”expires” content=”day-name, dd mm yyyy”>

You can also put time along with GMT

Example: <meta name=”expires” content=”tue, 31 dec 2015, 15:20:00, +5.30″>

syntax: <meta name=”expires” content=”day-name, dd mm yyyy, time, GMT”>

This feature is mainly use if page is about to delete or move after event.

Meta name generator:

The generator meta tag enables to add the name of program, software which helps you to made a website. This is completely up to you.

syntax: <meta name=”generator” content=”program-name”>

Example: <meta name=”generator” content=”adobe-Photoshop”>

Meta name googlebot:

The googlebot meta tags applies only for Google Search engine. It is similar to robot meta tag but not useful for other search engines.

Syntax: <meta name=”googlebot” content=”value”>

Example: <meta name=”googlebot” content=”noindex, nofollow”>

Meta name language:

language meta tag defines the original language of content. This tag is specially useful for non-English or multiple language website.

Syntax: <meta name=”language” content=”value”>

Example: <meta name=”language” content=”french”>

Meta name reply to:

The reply-to meta tag define the email address of responsible person in your organisation.

Syntax: <meta name=”reply-to” content=”email”>

Example: <meta name=”reply-to” content=”seowebsiteblog@gmail.com”>

Open graph meta tags:

The Open graph meta tags is used to configure the Facebook snippet of your webpage. This snippet will appear after publishing the link webpage on Facebook.

Meta property Open graph locale: 

Open graph meta title tag enable set locale of the resource. Default is en_US.

Syntax: <meta property=”og:locale” content=”value”>

Example: <meta property=”og:locale” content=”en_US”>

Meta property Open graph title: 

Open graph meta title tag enable user to set title.

Syntax: <meta property=”og:title” content=”text”>

Example: <meta property=”og:title” content=”Meta tags and their uses”>

Meta property Open graph site name:

This tag is used to set a site name not url (don’t provide suffix like .com, .in)

Syntax: <meta property=”og:site_name” content=”text”>

Example: <meta property=”og:site_name” content=”seowebsiteblog”>

Meta property Open graph URL:

This tag enables to write URL of webpage.

Syntax: <meta property=”og:url” content=”link”>

Example: <meta property=”og:url” content=”http://seowebsiteblog.com/meta-tags-and-their-uses-for-seo”>

Meta property Open graph Description:

This tag enables to write description of webpage.

Syntax: <meta property=”og:description” content=”text”>

Example: <meta property=”og:description” content=”Meta tags provides metadata about webpage. Search Engines uses meta tag to put relevant result. Hence, Meta tags are considered as one of the SEO factor.”>

Meta property Open graph type:

Default type is website. click here to see different open graph types.

Syntax: <meta property=”og:type” content=”text”>

Example: <meta property=”og:type” content=”video”>
<meta property=”og:type content=”music”>

Meta property Open graph image:

Enables to set Image Url. Recommended  image size is at least 1200×630 pixels.

Syntax: <meta property=”og:image” content=”url”>

Example: <meta property=”og:image” content=”http://seowebsiteblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Capture.jpg”>

Meta property Open graph article author:

Enables to set Facebook profile link of author.

syntax: <meta property=”article:author” content=”url”>

Example: <meta property=”article:author” content=”https://www.facebook.com/sushrut.zemse”>

Meta property Open graph article publisher:

Enables to set Facebook fan page link of website.

syntax: <meta property=”article:publisher” content=”url”>

Example: <meta property=”article:publisher” content=”https://www.facebook.com/seowebsiteblog”>

Meta property Open graph facebook app id:

Enables to set unique id.

syntax: <meta property=”fb:app_id” content=”fb-ap-id”>

Example: <meta property=”fb:app_id” content=”1234567890″>
